Licenses

Due to a high volume of license requests, response time is currently longer than usual. For more information please contact Pat Barrett.


We receive requests daily from citizens, municipalities and companies that wish to access MBTA-owned land. Whether you need to cure an encroachment, inspect a bridge, install or maintain utility and telecommunication lines, or perform environmental testing, proper licensing must be obtained prior to entering MBTA-owned land.


  1. Submit a License Application form either by mail or online.

  2. License Application form online

    Click here to fill out the License Application form online and submit it as a PDF. A copy of your submittal will be emailed to you as well. Mail six (6) copies of a map of the property and/or construction specifications, or CADD files if requested, and a check
    for the administrative fee of $1,000 (payable to the MBTA) to:

    Mail six (6) copies of the completed Application Form, six (6) copies of your map/construction specifications, or CADD files if requested, and administrative fee.

  4. TRA will seek approval for the License from the MBTA. You will be promptly notified if your request is approved or denied by the MBTA.

  5. After your license has been approved, review and sign the appropriate MBTA License Agreement. Please note that the minimum license fee is $1,000.


  6. MBTA Executes Agreement.
