WIFI Information Packet

The MBTA is seeking to add value to the MBTA patron commuter experience with improved quality WIFI services at no cost to the MBTA. The Authority aims to replace, expand and improve both the availability and the quality of the current WIFI service on the Commuter Rail to state of the art standards. The MBTA also wishes to add WIFI service to the MBTA Commuter Boats, and to provide WIFI service to the MBTA's three most important commuter rail stations: South Station, North Station and Back Bay Station.

The MBTA goals are:

• To provide its patrons with a state of the art WIFI experience throughout the Commuter Rail system and to North Station, South Station and Back Bay Station. The service should be easy to use, ubiquitous, continuous, secure and free to its riders
• To create a partnership with a reliable, technically adept and financially responsible sponsor
• To attract the private sector capital investment required to replace the existing WIFI system and to subsidize future operations
• To encourage creative approach with the business community that will benefit MBTA service and generate non-fare revenue

The WIFI service provider will receive Sponsor Visibility Benefits and Opportunities that include a variety of advertising and branding benefits:

• Presence on MBTA print materials such as system maps and schedules
• MBTA managed advertising displays in stations and on trains
• Sponsor identifying decals/signs in Commuter Rail stations and rail cars
• Link on MBTA website
• Other hospitality benefits

Added Telecommunications Business Opportunities
The MBTA operates a comprehensive telecommunications program serving cell, fiber and other telecommunications utilities. The telecommunications program operates throughout the MBTA's entire holdings encompassing 178 municipalities in Eastern Massachusetts, including the Boston Metropolitan Area, and over 400 miles of rights of way. Together with WIFI Sponsorship rights, the MBTA is offering expanded telecommunications opportunities. The WIFI Sponsor will have the opportunity to use these facilities for the development and expansion of telecommunications beyond MBTA Commuter Rail WIFI Service. The MBTA telecommunications program makes available rail rights of way including subsurface vacant duct work and air rights. Toward that end, the MBTA is encouraging proposals that offer expanded use of MBTA rights of way for a range of telecommunications infrastructure in addition to the WIFI infrastructure. The WIFI Sponsorship Program provides the opportunity for the WIFI provider to build and/or augment a wireless infrastructure system, including new cell towers on MBTA property throughout the commuter rail and ferry system.
