Subway Performers Program

The MBTA allows musical performers at designated Performance Areas throughout the subway system on a daily basis.


Subway Performers are required to obtain a permit and carry a badge identifying them as a licensed Performer. Approved locations for performances are identified by signage. Performances in other areas are not permitted.


To obtain a new permit and badge, or to renew a permit and badge, you will need:


  1. To complete a Subway Performer Permit & MBTA Access Privilege Application

  2. Two (2) forms of positive identification: a Government issued ID (e.g., passport, driver's license, military ID) with a recent photo and one other form of ID. PLEASE NOTE: If you are not a US Citizen you must show proof of legal residency or visitor status with either a Visa or Green Card

  3. One (1) piece of mail with your current address and a post-mark date within the last 30 days.

  4. A Money Order for $25.00 made payable to the MBTA or you may prepay through the Paypal link below. Cash, personal checks and credit cards will not be accepted.


When you have all the requirements listed above please call 617.482.2525 to make an appointment to deliver your paperwork and have your picture taken for an ID badge. Appointments are available Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 9:00AM - 3:00PM. Your permit and ID will be mailed within 10 to 14 days.

Transit Realty Associates, LLC is the MBTA's designated real estate representative.
